Mo’Hits rapper, Ikechukwu, is again keeping entertainment portals buzzing, as rumour of his supposed departure from the ace record label dominates various forums in the cyber world. Although the rumour is yet to be confirmed, it gets stronger with different entertainment websites attributing the source to a Mo’Hits mole. It dominated the two most populous social network pages in Nigeria - Facebook and Twitter; yet neither a confirmation nor a rebuff had been made by either the rapper or the imprint several days after the rumour broke. A call through to Mo’Hits’s PR Manager, Sunny Are was also futile as he claimed not to know anything about the rumour - how convenient, huh?
A media delight
The self acclaimed ‘Son of the Soil’ has created more buzz with news than he has ever done with his music since his entrance. Not to take anything away from the Mtv Africa Music Award winner, a little over a year ago, news of his departure from his first home, Storm Records, conquered entertainment reporting like an uncontrolled forest inferno, a feat he has not earned with his rhyming. Three singles after, a rumoured fallout with the Mo’Hits’ boss, Don Jazzy, now gets more mention than the release of his three weeks old latest single, ‘The Truest’.
Rap credibility
When Ikechukwu jumped ship in July 2009, entertainment pundits believed it is the move that will finally put to rest the controversy surrounding his marketability. Although he’s got a handful of mainstream hits in ‘Wind am Well’ and ‘Shobeedoobeedoo’, the question mark on his depth as a rapper has always remained. When he headlined the Silverbird Galleria’s monthly TG1stT in May 2009, while Wande Coal got an encore opening for him, a noticeable number of guests left when Ikechukwu took order of the mic.
With his onward move to Mo’Hits viewed by some as a move that can give his career ‘a home run’, others argue it will hamper his rapping skills as Don Jazzy is known to convert rappers to singers. Dr. SID and D’Prince are living testimonies. Although his purported departure from Mo’Hits is still fuzzy, one thing remains clear; three lukewarm singles since joining Mo’Hits is not a good record. With the move away from Storm already liable for the poor sales performance of his 2008 album, ‘Live and Times of Killz Vol. 1’, what lies in wait for the rapper and his alter egos; E, Killz, E-Killz, if he decides to switch alliance again doesn’t look cool.
