The message says "Nigerian Football Star Taye Taiwo Turns 25 Today In UK & His Twin Brother Turns 33 In Nigeria" although some variations state 37 or 39 as the age of his twin.
Taye Taiwo has now responded to the chatter, describing it as "sick" and explaining that he never even knew his twin.
Speaking to Kick Off Nigeria.com he said: "I don't know what kind of sick joke this is, or the kind of sick person who will come up with it."
"I did not even know my twin." he continued. "I was very young when my father told me that she died when we were young."
"Why is it that people are always looking for a way to bring others down? I don't understand it."
