The Biggest Night in Music has just become the Biggest Night on TV!
The Channel O Music Video Awards are going LIVE for the very first time this year – and the Original.African channel is stopping at nothing to ensure viewers at home are entertained during and after the show!
Thursday 4 November is the night it all goes down – and the action is super-charged from the moment the show begins at 21:00 (CAT) until long after the final winner walks off the stage.
As part of Channel O’s promise to turn the Biggest Night in Music into the Biggest Night on TV, the channel has secured two exclusive music video debuts straight after the live event broadcast ends.
These come from two of Africa’s biggest breakout hip-hop stars – Khuli Chana and Kwesta.
Hip-hop and Motswako kingpin Khuli Chana will be debuting the hot new video for “Konka”. The song is the latest single to be pulled off his acclaimed album The MotswakOriginator which sees Khuli working with some of the hottest producers in the game including TowdeeMac, IV League, Don Juan and PH.
Kwesta’s “Flava” is the second Channel O exclusive music video debuting straight after the awards broadcast on Thursday 4 November.
2010 has seen Kwesta make good on the promise he showed by winning Yfm’s Rap Activity Jam and e.tv’s freestyle tunes with debut album, Special Rekwest. Channel O will be exclusively premiering Kwesta’s new video for the song “Flava” directly after the 2010 Channel O Music Video Awards LIVE broadcast.
With the promise of a star-studded LIVE awards show – under the musical direction of Zwai Bala – and these two exclusive video premiers, THE BIGGEST NIGHT IN MUSIC HAS JUST BECOME THE BIGGEST NIGHT ON TV. No question!

K’Naan honoured by 2010 Channel O Music Video Awards
2010 has been, hands down, K’NAAN’s year – so it’s no surprise to find the Somalia-born artist being selected as the recipient of the Special Recognition Award at this year’s Channel O Music Video Awards.
The accolade comes in the wake of news that K’NAAN is among the leading nominees in Africa’s most highly-regarded music awards event with three nods. His video for ‘T.I.A.” has earned K’NAAN a nomination in the Most Gifted Video of the Year category as well as for Most Gifted Hip-Hop Video and Most Gifted Male Video.
“It’s incredible to be honoured by Channel O this year,” the Canadian-based rapper says.
“It’s been an amazing year but the highlight was definitely the trip I took through Africa with the 2010 FIFA World Cup – and to be honoured by a channel that is truly pan-African in its outlook and vision is very special.”
Although K’NAAN earned a devoted fan base off the back of his two albums – 2005’s Dusty Foot Philosopher, which won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year a year later, and 2009’s Troubadour – it was the stadium-fitting, lighter hoisting anthem ‘Wavin’ Flag’ that really cemented his presence as an African artist capable of global reach.
Chosen as Coca-Cola’s official anthem for the 2010 World Cup and originally featured on the album Troubadour, the remixed version of ‘Wavin’ Flag’ became the unofficial anthem of the global foot-balling event, turning K’NAAN into a household name all over the world.
The most striking aspect of K’NAAN’s global fame is how directly he’s managed to keep his homeland in the spotlight.
When asked in a recent interview with Associated Press if he ever thought about “just rapping” and not talking about Somalia, K’NAAN emphatically replied, “By writing those things in a sense it became that I’m writing about Somalia, because there’s no way to represent my life in an honest way without the conflicts in Somalia.”
Yolisa Phahle, Channel Director: Special Interests at M-Net, says that selecting K’NAAN to receive the Special Recognition Award at the 2010 Channel O Music Video Awards was an easy decision.
“We have always been an early supporter of K’NAAN’s music videos and have watched his career blossom with real pride,” says Phahle.
“K’NAAN really does sum up the kind of African artist we hope can impact globally – he’s clearly enormously gifted as a rapper and lyricist but is not afraid to speak out on the issues that are important to him and all us Africans.”
